If you have basic carpentry skills and know how to use a level you may be able to install your own house shutters.  If you feel uncomfortable about doing the job, you can pay a carpenter to install the shutters on your home.  However, installing house shutters is very simple and can be done by many people.

Do not be anxious by the prospect of installing your new house shutters.  If others can do this undemanding job, so can you.  You just need to understand some basic concepts.  There are two recommended methods for installing your shutters.  You can decide on an inside mount or an outside mount.  It is easiest to install an inside mount which can be completed straight from your open window.

Inside mount installation

For an inside mount installation, the shutter attaches upon the inside of the window casing on the window jamb.  This is ordinarily a easier process of installation and is much preferred by professionals for the reason that it is less complicated and needs no framing strips.

Begin by checking to see that the window jamb is in good shape.  You will want to attach the shutter hardware with screws.  To do this, drill a hole through the jamb at the correct spots so that the shutter can be mounted into the window jamb.  The jamb has to be solid so that the shutter will be secure.

Now that you have screwed on the hardware, you should check to see if the shutters line up with the window.  You might use a level to check that that they are lined up. Be sure to read the enclosed literature as each style of inside mounted shutter is attached differently.  If you understand how to use a drill motor, you will be able to quickly complete an inside mount for your shutters.

Outside mount installation

Understandably, an outside mount attaches to the outside of the window, most often into the trim, or even the wall.  If you wish to use an outside mount when using inside shutters, please don’t screw the hardware into the wall panel unless it is anchored as the unit will likely come out of the wall.  Some people prefer an outside mount so that the installation can be a little “off” as regards the measurements, which you just can’t do with an inside mount. Of course this means that the outside mount does not look as professional as the inside mount.

Remember to use a plumb bob and level when installing house shutters in order to ensure that they are straight.  Your eyes might be fooled, but a level will not.  You will need an electric drill, a drive socket and the right apexes, and also toggles if you are installing into drywall without a stud.

Do not be afraid to install your house shutters yourself.  This is fairly easy and when you have installed one unit, the rest will be easy to do.  You only need a free afternoon, the required tools, namely, a screwdriver, drill, toggle mounts (if installing into drywall) and a level, you are capable of doing this job easily and quiclky.
